Rat

The Parallax View

Rat is the animal at the center of an experiment used to illustrate how a reward signal can become an end in itself. With access to a lever that sends electrical impulses to an electrode in its medial forebrain bundle, it presses repeatedly until exhaustion, giving up opportunities to eat, drink, and engage in reproductive behavior. The episode presents pleasure not as a passing accompaniment to survival but as a powerful pursuit that can displace it.

The Experiment

The setup gives Rat a direct route to brain stimulation: pressing the lever activates an electrode implanted in a pleasure-related pathway. Rather than using food or other resources to reach a reward, the animal can trigger the stimulation itself. It continues pressing to the point of exhaustion, despite the competing opportunities named in the account. The experiment’s force lies in this contrast between an available reward and the basic needs Rat neglects while pursuing it.

Conceptual Role

The book uses Rat to clarify a proposed shift from pleasure as an indicator of successful, goal-directed activity to pleasure pursued for its own sake. The stimulation bypasses the ordinary mediation of the senses and the environment; it therefore serves as an example of reward detached from the survival-related circumstances that would normally accompany it. Rat’s behavior gives concrete form to the passage’s account of a short circuit: a signal associated with fitness becomes an independent aim, even when pursuing it works against survival.
